Last week a young girl gave birth at home and then proceeded to stab her new born 139 times and toss the body in the trash. The girl is now being tried for murder with a life sentence. I cannot help but think of the women who choose an abortion at 36 weeks gestation and feel they are just a guilty of murder as this young woman. What makes the situation so different? Why does one girl spend the rest of her life in prison while the other is sent home without a question asked? Does anyone else see this inconsistency?
The second bit I have to comment on is the VA Tech killer. I just read a great editorial by Mona Charen regarding guns laws in this country...
"For centuries, guns have been plentiful in the United States. Young men, and often young women as well, were taught gun safety and how to shoot before they were old enough to drive cars. Yet your chances of being gunned down by a total stanger at your local school or bank or church in 1644, 1744, 1844 or 1944 were exactly nil. Yes, we had some spectacular political assasinations, but to suggest that the easy availability of guns accounts for the grim social realities we've created in the 21st century is simplistic to the point of foolishness."
The article continue...
"Our culture has been all about disinhibition for the past genereation or more. We've lost our inhibitions about sex (and we celebrate this as liberation), about eating (we've gained an average of 50 pounds over the past century, and we blame it on genes), and about violence...Glorification of gun violence in particular is the mainstay of the video game world, movies, television and popular music."
It is not the gun that is the problem; it is the person pulling the trigger. Our culture is not doing anything to help these people through their suffering and troubles. Anything goes and that is proving to be devistating to the well-being of young souls. Without morals we have a crazed society looking for peace and not knowing where to find it. Our young people are calling out for help and we will not offer it to them in the name of tolerance.
