"The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground" - Thomas Jefferson

We subscribe to a newsletter from Hillsdale College. The recent article was titled, "Future Prospects for Economic Liberty". I found the article to be very eye opening and sad at the same time. The jist of the article explains how if America does not remain true to the Constitution we will lose our liberty and lose what makes America America.

The author points out that our founding fathers established our government as a Republic and instilled laws and regulations to ensure that Gov't does not infringe on natural human liberty. The little people are protected from Big Gov't. That freedom has been overlooked many times in this and the last century. We, the people, over time have been willing to give up little liberties here and there and soon we will not have any.

If the Gov.'t says it needs money for health care, global warming, farm subsidies and bailouts it is essentially taking money (forcibly) from you and me to give to someone else. Our founding Father's believed that money should be left in the hands of the one who earned it and that they will spend it more wisely than the Gov.'t ever could. The author comments that the Gov't is treating its citizens as children who don't know better and that they do. We, I would argue, are not children and we can make the best decisions for the use of our own money.

"The primary justification for increasing the size and scale of government at the expense of liberty is that government can achieve what it perceives as good....but the Gov.'t has no resources of its own...so they reach into your and my pocket."

..."In a free society, we want the great majority, if not all, of our relationships to be voluntary."

"Some will respond that big Gov.'t is what the voters want, and that in a democracy the majority rules. But America's Founders didn't found a democracy, they founded a republic. Instead, they set-up a limited Gov't, with checks and balances, to help ensure that the reason of the people, rather than the selfish passions of a majority, would hold sway."

In light of the health care debate going on today I have to believe that universal, Gov.'t funded health care would not be beneficial to the majority if anyone. The idea behind the goal of this program is understandable, but the problem runs deeper than simply forcing a new program on the masses. PLEASE consider your view on this issue and if you disagree with the current momentum in the senate contact your rep. and let them know how you, their constituent, feels. The problem will not be solved in this manner. It will only get worse for more Americans.

I am thankful to be an American and to live in such a blessed country. We will continue to have a unique and special country only if we continue on the path the Founding Fathers laid out for us. Stand up America and remember your roots. Pursue the ultimate goal of liberty for all and the rest will fall into place.
