- Sven Molter nice find volz. nice find indeed.
  April 26 at 6:18pm ·
- Kira Davis No, if its gay it should die...sarc/off. That's stupid. Like we pro-life people put a value on life. That's the whole point, everyone is entitled to a chance at life, no matter what your circumstances or character.
  April 26 at 6:20pm · · 1 person
- Ryan Forber except when you're throwing high-fives to your political buddies who are trampling gay rights, right?
  April 26 at 6:21pm ·
- Anna Friese I thought there were only two options...male or female? If "gay" is a gender as is implied by the shirt, how can you tell?
  April 26 at 6:21pm ·
- Kira Davis sorry Trav, I hate this shirt. I think it speaks to the ignorance of many who oppose pro life... not intelligence-wise, but just in the respect that they don't really understand the argument that is being made.
  April 26 at 6:22pm ·
- Kira Davis Right, Ryan, except for that. I love throwing high fives while trampling gay rights. You got me!
  April 26 at 6:23pm ·
- Travis Volz Two options? I didn't know being gay was an "option". Believe me, I married one.

- Anna Friese Can a fetus be gay is my thought/question.
  April 26 at 6:25pm ·

Can I just say really quickly that you'd be pretty hard-pressed to find someone who would come out as pro-death? People who advocate choice aren't opposed to life. They're opposed to poverty, neglect and abuse. I think both sides of this ar...See More

- Mira Velasco Clearly this is not about being ignorant about pro-life; it's meant to be a pun at those that fight for a persons right to live, then tell them, when they are older, their LIFE choices are not valid and have to be regulated. duh!
  April 26 at 6:29pm · · 1 person
- Travis Volz I'm sorry, Anna. I misunderstood your first comment. I interpret what you're saying now. I understand genitalia and all of that, but I really believe there is something there (maybe unfounded) before a choice is made to be gay or straight. Believe me.
  April 26 at 6:29pm ·
- David Gibbs Kira, the point of the shirt is that a lot of the same people who don't want any fetus to die - also will oppose its equality as a human being if it ends up being gay. The point of the shirt isn't to bash those who oppose abortion, but rather challenge them to honor the whole life-long-life of the fetus.
  April 26 at 6:29pm · · 2 people
- Mira Velasco david, you said that so much more eloquently than i. thank you.
  April 26 at 6:30pm · · 1 person
- David Gibbs Travis, on one hand, you're lucky because I can't marry a gay person of my choosing because so many biggots (many of whom oppose abortion) keep voting against my equality.
  April 26 at 6:31pm ·
- Travis Volz Damn, I wish my status updates were this popular. I could make a living.
  April 26 at 6:31pm ·
- Ryan Forber Very few people are really pro-life; they're anti-abortion. Most pro-lifers have a hard time when you fire a moral conundrum at them like self-defense, war or the death penalty. I don't think life is sacred; I agree with Hobbes as to the nature of man.
  April 26 at 6:34pm · · 1 person
- David Gibbs Kira, saying the baby should die if it's gay - even being sarcastic is really cruel. What if I said the same thing about people with brown skin? Does hate speech become okay if we end it with "sarc/off". You're better than that.

- Travis Volz And, please don't reference the Book of Leviticus anyone. My Jewish friends are much more progressive than any of us who call ourselves "Christian".
  April 26 at 6:36pm ·
- Kira Davis If we were in the room together David, you could have seen my face when I said that. It was an insult to the person who would think I believe that.
  April 26 at 6:36pm ·
- Jasan Whitaker I love this Travis!
What I like most is that it simply asks a good question. What makes it controversial is that we know some people would say yes, while sadly, many others would say no.
  April 26 at 6:37pm · · 3 people
- Kira Davis My problem with the shirt is that it assumes too much. It assumes that I, as a pro-lifer, hate gay people and it assumes that I would want gay babies to die just because they are gay. It is just as bigoted and ignorant as the people it supposedly calls out
  April 26 at 6:37pm ·
- Travis Volz You're reaching, Kira. You know what the shirt means.
  April 26 at 6:37pm · · 2 people
- Ryan Forber Most pro-lifers are zealous Christians, so it stands to reason that they oppose gay rights.
  April 26 at 6:38pm · · 1 person
- Travis Volz Garrison Keillor would laugh at this. He's a Christian, but not a zealous one.
  April 26 at 6:39pm · · 1 person
- Kira Davis I'm not reaching, Travis. That's what that shirt says to me.
  April 26 at 6:39pm ·
- Kira Davis It says something different to you I guess, but it is possible to think a different way on this issue without being a bigot or idiot.
  April 26 at 6:40pm ·
- Jasan Whitaker PS. And yes, a baby can be born gay or straight.
  April 26 at 6:42pm ·
- Jasan Whitaker Kira...it does not assume anything. It acknowledges that not everyone would say yes or no.
  April 26 at 6:44pm · · 1 person
- Nik Koele It's not so much about what the shirt says to you, as it is about what you say to the question posed by the shirt.

- Ryan Forber For everyone who doesn't know, this is a take on George Carlin's joke from the 90's: "These people will do everything they can to save a fetus, but if it grows up to be a doctor they just might have to kill it?"

- Travis Volz ‎@Nik. Thank David Gibbs (NWC '94 or '95?). He lives in Portland, OR now.
  April 26 at 6:48pm ·
- David Gibbs Kira - you really should watch your words better - I know how laughable that might sound coming from me on here, but joking about murdering gay people is really really offensive. Maybe Travis didn't post this for the sole purpose of saying this is about you. In case you missplaced 4 years of memory at NWC - LOTS of people who oppose the legalization of Abortion DO hate gay people. You can't deny this.
  April 26 at 6:49pm · · 1 person
- Travis Volz Hey Kira. I know you are not a bigot. You are certainly not an idiot either (you're one of the smartest people I know). Stubborn? Maybe :)
  April 26 at 6:50pm · · 2 people
- Travis Volz We are NOT all left-wing liberals here either. This is just common sense. Stick up for your fellow human beings. Who cares if John likes Steve or Michelle has a crush on Rachel? Really?! Are they messing with your family? No. None of your business. Good grief!
  April 26 at 7:06pm · · 5 people
- David Gibbs I'm not a left-wing liberal, I just believe in the teaching of Jesus Christ, which is why I support human rights, access to health care, people having jobs and enough to eat - all things the right wing is trying to take away, and I will ALWAYS speak up to hate speech.

- Joe Snavely As a Christian who is both pro-life and also pro-full inclusion and rights for all GLBT folks, I get what Kira is saying. She might be stretching a bit...but there is a negative vibe to this image that is rooted in assumption. Also, I reject the notion that Garrison Keillor is not a zealous Christian...he just isn't a bigoted one. ;-)
  April 26 at 7:33pm ·
- Mira Velasco ha! if i knew how to get into being a creative writer, i might try for the job myself! though clearly, David is a much better writer than i. ha

- Travis Volz Let's get the pro-choice thing out of the way. I can't think of many people who "Like" abortion or the idea of making a choice like that. I guarantee if you put up a Facebook page for "Pro-death" or "Pro-abortion", only the Satanists will give a thumbs up. Let's not mess with vernacular.

- David Gibbs Kira, on behalf of millions and millions of gay people, I'm still waiting for your appology for your earlier comment about killing the gay babies.
  April 26 at 8:03pm ·
- Joe Snavely Yes, "pro-life" and "pro-choice" are actually ridiculously limited labels that are filled with their own inherent assumptions, especially in American culture.
  April 26 at 8:05pm · · 1 person
- Joe Snavely Anna, that is what I am screaming!
  April 26 at 8:06pm ·
- David Gibbs Why do so many people who oppose the legalization of abortion - also support the death penalty?
  April 26 at 8:10pm ·
- Joe Snavely I wonder that as well David. I see supporting life, and as Anna said supporting life to its fullest (which includes everything from civil rights to economic justice), as putting one on an unavoidable trajectory towards opposing the death penalty...at least if one hopes to maintain any sort of logical consitency.
  April 26 at 8:14pm ·
- Travis Volz Hey David. Joe is a good one. An Episcopalian minister in Cincinnati (we worked at Regis University). I won't label him, politically (I know he doesn't like that). He continues to ask spiritual questions though, just like you. I can only assume he appreciates Garrison Keillor.
  April 26 at 8:30pm ·
- David Gibbs I too belong to Ye Olde Episcopal Church (mostly it's for cool people whose compulsion to think - makes them not fit in well with other churches.)

- Travis Volz ‎@David. Maybe that's why I grew up in the ELCA and worked at a Jesuit university with Joe :)

- Travis Volz ‎@David. How did we both end up at a conservative Dutch Reform college? I'm not kidding when I say it was like "Footloose".
  April 26 at 8:36pm ·
- Joe Snavely Lol...thanks Travis. I try. I do also appreciate Garrison...although I do admit smiling at the joke on the SNL news about falling asleep while driving being one of the most deadly problems in America...to which Seth said 'You have a lot of blood on your hands Prairie Home Companion." Heh.

- Travis Volz I liked the Family Guy where Peter starts out, "It was the day of the tuna hotdish jamboree..." when he is suddenly hit by a chair and stopped. Either the Simpsons or Family Guy has one where one character starts to talk in circles before another interrupts "Get on with it Keillor!".

- Travis Volz Well Tanya, there was one "club" the year before I move to Orange City. It mysteriously burned to the ground. No lie. Off the subject, "Q: Why don't Christian Reformers have sex standing up? A: It might lead to dancing."

- Tanya Owen Lol Travis. Classic. I still managed to get myself in enough trouble there, no doubt..... But I did live in fear that if caught drunk they'd call my parents. :)
  April 26 at 9:39pm ·
- Brandt Carlson why would the sexual orientation of a fetus change the fight for it's rights? all humans have rights that need to be respectied and fought for...I just wish in our society we would fight harder for the right's of babies (or fetuses as they are referred to) as much as society fights for gay/lesbian rights.
  April 26 at 10:10pm ·
- Kayla Clark Looks like I missed out on a really good conversation! Whether you like the shirt or not, it did get you talking, thinking and having conversations about what you believe....which can't be a bad thing at all!
  April 27 at 1:20am ·
- David Gibbs Brandt, it's not about gay rights, it's about HUMAN rights. You cannot experience equality until EVERYONE has the same rights, opportunities and responsibilities as I do. Fetuses don't have rights.
  April 27 at 1:53pm ·
- David Gibbs Still waiting for that appology Kira . . . . .
  April 27 at 2:28pm ·
- Brandt Carlson everyone is entitled to their opinion....
  April 27 at 2:36pm ·
- Anna Friese Let us lead by example, forgiving others who offend us and love others even when we don't always agree.
  April 27 at 3:13pm · · 1 person
- David Gibbs It's my opinion that factually and legally, fetuses don't have rights. That being said, let's start creating a society without unwanted pregnancies. Doesn't that make tons more sense than trying to illegalize abortion? Why are so many "christians" so alright with women dying in back alleys?
  April 27 at 3:45pm · · 2 people
- Anna Friese Could it be that an "unwanted" pregnancy could turn into life's biggest blessing? Isn't life about love and loss and everything in between? A man's character is made out of what he does with the hand he is dealt in life. There is no escaping the reality that sometimes "unwanted" things happen to us. But how we deal with those circumstances determines what kind of life we lead...happy or devastated and angry.
  April 27 at 7:19pm · · 1 person
- David Gibbs Anna, I think you raise a beautiful and important point.
As a non-breeder it's easy for me to just expect people to prevent getting pregnant, but I do realize it's not always that simple.
